Mahale Mountains

Trek with wild chimpanzees on the shores of Africa's deepest lake.

Why Mahale?

Mahale Mountains National Park is one of Tanzania's most remote and breathtaking destinations — a place where dense equatorial rainforest tumbles down the steep flanks of the Mahale Mountains directly into the crystalline waters of Lake Tanganyika, one of the world's oldest, deepest, and most biologically extraordinary lakes. Getting there is an adventure in itself, requiring a charter flight to a remote lakeside airstrip followed by a scenic boat transfer along the lake's shimmering surface.

The park's greatest draw is its wild chimpanzee population — Tanzania's largest habituated chimpanzee community, numbering around 60 to 70 individuals from the famous M group. Unlike chimpanzee encounters in other parts of Africa, Mahale's chimps have been studied and habituated to human presence since the 1960s, allowing visitors to walk quietly within metres of these extraordinary animals as they feed, groom, play, and interact in their forest home.

Chimpanzee trekking in Mahale is unlike any wildlife experience in Africa. It is a walking encounter, tracking on foot through ancient forest with experienced guides, following chimp calls until you find the troop. When you do, you are immersed — chimps overhead, all around, moving through shafts of forest light in moments of raw, intimate connection with our closest living relatives.

Beyond the chimps, Mahale offers the astonishing bonus of Lake Tanganyika — a vast, freshwater inland sea so clear and still it mirrors the mountains above it. Guests can snorkel with hundreds of endemic cichlid fish, kayak along the shoreline, swim from pristine white-sand beaches, and watch spectacular sunsets paint the lake's surface in gold. There is truly nowhere else on earth quite like Mahale.

Mahale Defined

Where the forest meets the lake

There is a moment, deep in Mahale's forest, when a chimpanzee pauses and looks directly at you — and you look back. The intelligence in those eyes, the familiarity of the expression, the uncanny sense of recognition across an evolutionary divide of 98.7% shared DNA — it stops you completely. This is not a zoo. This is a wild family going about their ancient lives, and you have been granted the extraordinary privilege of witnessing it. Mahale does not just show you wildlife. It shows you yourself.

The World of Mahale

Mahale Mountains National Park occupies a spectacular ecological transition zone where the eastern edge of the Congo rainforest basin meets the open miombo woodlands of central Tanzania. The Chimpanzee Forest Zone along the park's lower western slopes is the heart of the experience — dense, canopied tropical forest where the M-group chimps range daily and where trekking encounters take place in conditions of extraordinary intimacy. Above this, the Mahale Mountain Peaks rise steeply to over 2,460 metres, draped in montane forest and bamboo that harbours colobus monkeys, leopards, and hundreds of forest bird species seldom encountered elsewhere in Tanzania. Along the park's eastern boundary, Lake Tanganyika's Shoreline stretches in a ribbon of clear, warm water and white sand beach — the venue for swimming, snorkelling, kayaking, and the park's most memorable sunsets. In the transition zone between forest and lake, the Miombo Woodland Fringe hosts buffalo, roan antelope, and a rich diversity of raptors along the forest edge at dusk and dawn.

Mahale is calling. How will you answer?

A Mahale chimpanzee trek is one of Africa's ultimate bucket-list experiences — and one of the most emotionally moving encounters any traveller can have. Combine it with Katavi National Park for the definitive Western Tanzania wilderness adventure: chimpanzees in the morning forest, lions on the open floodplain in the afternoon. Mahale visits are limited to a small number of guests per day — early booking is essential.

Mahale FAQs

You set off on foot with an experienced guide and tracker, typically at dawn, following the sounds and signs of the M-group chimps through the forest. Treks can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours depending on where the chimps are ranging. When you find them, you are allowed to spend up to one hour with the group, watching them groom, feed, play, and interact. The trekking is through genuine tropical forest on uneven terrain — a moderate level of fitness is helpful.

No wildlife encounter can ever be fully guaranteed — the chimps are wild and free-ranging. However, Mahale has an exceptionally high sighting success rate, typically exceeding 90%, because the M-group is fully habituated and very well monitored by the park's research team. Our guides have decades of experience tracking this specific community, which significantly increases the likelihood of a successful and rewarding encounter on every visit.

Mahale is one of Tanzania's most remote parks, which is precisely part of its magic. Access is by charter flight to Mahale airstrip — flights typically connect from Arusha, Dar es Salaam, or Katavi. From the airstrip, guests transfer by motorboat across the shimmering waters of Lake Tanganyika to their lodge. There are no roads into the park at all — which ensures the remoteness and exclusivity that make Mahale so extraordinary.

The best time to visit Mahale for chimpanzee trekking is during the dry season from June to October, when forest trails are less muddy and the chimps tend to descend to lower elevations where they are easier to find. Lake Tanganyika is calm and beautiful year-round. The park closes during the heaviest rains of March and April. Early booking is strongly advised as Mahale's limited number of visitor spots fill months in advance.

Absolutely — and a Mahale-Katavi combination is one of Tanzania's most spectacular safari pairings. Katavi National Park lies just 45 minutes by charter flight from Mahale and offers one of Africa's most dramatic dry-season wildlife spectacles — thousands of buffalo, hippos, and elephants concentrated around shrinking waterholes, with lions and hyenas patrolling in numbers that rival the Serengeti. The two parks together deliver an unbeatable western Tanzania wilderness adventure that few travellers ever experience.
