Southern Circuit

Tanzania's Last Great Wilderness

5 Remote Parks
99,000 km² of Wilderness
0 Mass Tourism

While the world flocks to the Northern Circuit, Tanzania's south remains a sanctuary of genuine wilderness — an arc of vast, untracked parks where the only footprints in the sand are yours and those of the animals. The Southern Circuit is Africa as it once was, and still is.

From the baobab-studded bushlands of Ruaha — Tanzania's largest national park — to the waterways and ancient forest of Nyerere, and the remote chimpanzee sanctuaries of Mahale and Katavi in the west, this circuit rewards those willing to go further with encounters that feel genuinely exclusive.

Fly-in camps, walking safaris, boat safaris, and chimp tracking — the Southern Circuit offers an intimacy that the north cannot match.

Ruaha river hippos and elephants Best: Jun – Oct

Ruaha National Park

Tanzania's Largest Wilderness

Ruaha is Tanzania's largest national park and one of Africa's most compelling wildlife destinations. Ancient baobabs, the life-giving Great Ruaha River, and an extraordinary density of predators — including over 10% of the world's wild lion population — define a landscape that feels biblical in its scale and drama.

Nyerere National Park (Selous)

Africa's Largest Protected Area

Once Africa's largest game reserve, Nyerere National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of staggering scale. Boat safaris on the Rufiji River, fly-camping on its banks, walking through ancient miombo woodland — here, the classic game drive is only one of many possibilities.

Mikumi National Park

The Southern Circuit Gateway

Nicknamed "Tanzania's Serengeti," Mikumi's open floodplains deliver exceptional lion sightings and enormous elephant herds within easy reach of Dar es Salaam. An accessible, rewarding destination that pairs perfectly with Ruaha or Nyerere on a longer southern journey.

Udzungwa Mountains National Park

The Eastern Galápagos

One of Africa's most biodiverse mountain ecosystems, the Udzungwa range hosts an astonishing number of endemic species found nowhere else on earth. Trekking through ancient rainforest to Sanje Falls — a 170-metre cascade — is among Tanzania's most spectacular non-safari adventures.

Hippo pods in Katavi dry season Best: Jun – Oct

Katavi National Park

The Most Remote Safari on Earth

Katavi is Tanzania's most isolated park and one of Africa's last true frontiers. In the dry season, hundreds of hippos and crocodiles are squeezed into receding pools, and vast herds of buffalo attract packs of lion and hyena. The entire park receives fewer visitors per year than Ngorongoro sees in a single day.

"In the south, the wilderness has not yet learned it is supposed to perform for visitors. It simply exists — vast, indifferent, and breathtaking."
